What Is the Yale Invitational?
The Yale Invitational is a national-level high school mock trial tournament that brings together some of the most elite mock trial teams from across the country (and occasionally from abroad). Teams compete using a fictional legal case designed specifically for the competition, often with challenging legal and factual issues.
It is considered a premier early-season tournament—used by many top programs to prepare for their official state and national competitions.
Key Features
Custom Case Material
- The Yale Invitational uses its own unique case, created by the Yale Mock Trial team.
- The case is typically released 4–6 weeks before the tournament, giving teams limited time to prepare.
- The case can be civil or criminal and includes:

Team Format
- Each team must prepare both sides (Prosecution/Plaintiff and Defense).
- Teams typically field 6–8 students per trial, with:
- 3 attorneys
- 3 witnesses
- Possibly a timekeeper or alternate
Judges and Scoring
- Judges are usually Yale students, law students, legal professionals, or alumni.
- Teams are scored based on:
- Legal knowledge
- Advocacy and delivery

- Team organization and courtroom decorum
- Judges give ballots, and the team with the most ballots wins the round.

- Finals round held in front of a full judging panel
- Awards for:
- Top teams
